Municipality of Parapotamos, Thesprotia
The history of the municipality
Parapotamos was inhabited by Muslim Turk-Albanians until 1944 who were driven off by
the rebels (who it is known that they had joined the conquerors). In 1944 and on all the
inhabitants of Elataria (Lambanitsa) which is northwest of Paramythia
moved to Parapotamos that was called Varfani until then.
The date it was built is unknown, but considering the monuments of the region (churches
e.t.c.) it is assumed that it was inhabited before 1453. The community
was founded in 1955. Until then it was a settlement of the community of Maroudi.
In 1990 with the voluntary union of Dramesi and the settlement of Agios
Georgios, the Municipality of Parapotamos was founded, the first
municipality in Epirus and the only one in Thesprotia created this way.
In 1998 it was expanded even more with the program Ioannis Kapodistrias,
since the community of Korytiani with its settlements Ano
Korytiani, Semeriza, Beteleni and Dilofo,
the settlement Geroplatanos of the ex community of Pigadoulia
and the settlement Drimitsa of the Municipality of Igoumenitsa were
integrated in the municipality. |
