Municipality of Parapotamos, Thesprotia
Our region
The Municipality of Parapotamos belongs to the Prefecture of
Thesprotia and the Region of Epirus. It is located in the
central area of the municipality, borders the Municipality of Filiates on the north, the
Municipality of Paramythia on the southeast and the Municipality of Igoumenitsa on
the west. The Municipality is crossed by the National Road Igoumenitsa -
Ioannina, the road that connects Igoumenitsa and the Prefecture of Thesprotia
with the main city of Epirus, Ioannina.
The seat of the Municipality of Parapotamos is the homonym settlement
located in the west part of the municipality and built at the foot of Vasilakis
(Ntoulka) hill and next to the river Kalamas (Thyamis). This location
gave the settlement its present name, "Parapotamos" (=next to the river).
It has 1.750 permanent inhabitants who reach up to 2.500 at the summer
time. The new municipality is 46.425 square kilometers in extent, 7.600
of which are cultivable, 32.000 are grassland and woods and the rest is taken up by
settlements, roads and streams. There are traditional cafes (kafenia) in
all the settlements of the municipality, whereas there are restaurants in
the seat of the municipality where one can enjoy traditional dishes. |
